Fire Safety Design for School Buildings

Technical Building Bulletin 100 has been issued for review with the impacts likely to be felt in all schools in coming years and should be considered by any schools considering building projects in the near future. The document will be of particular interest to those who oversee fire safety management in schools including Governors, Headteachers, Bursars and Operational Managers.

The consultation process is requesting input into several key areas that are likely to see future recommendations due to changes in building practices as well as the impact of several serious fires, including of course, the Grenfell disaster.

More research is needed into the specification, design and installation of fire suppression systems, the size of compartments and recommendations to prevent single escape staircase routes to be used in schools in buildings with two floors or more. Additional topics include classification of schools higher than 18m as higher risk buildings and for BB100 to specifically apply to boarding accommodation.

Further information relating to this guidance will be published as it is received.
